Lady Gaga (00:00):
Heads up and sing. Abracadabra. Amor oo na na. Abra ca da bra. Morta oo gaga.
Speaker 2 (00:06):
Did you stay up late? I did. We welcome you back to CBS Mornings because last night was MTV's Video Music Awards. It's all about bringing the people together. And there were big star performances, big for every generation, like Steven Tyler to Sabrina Carpenter, love her, we talked to her last week, to songbird supreme, Mariah Carey. There's only one. Now, not everybody got to go, but guess what? Entertainment Tonight's Denny Directo was there.
Speaker 3 (00:36):
And the VMA video of the year goes to Ariana Grande, Brighter Days Ahead.
Denny Directo (00:47):
It was a bright night for Ariana Grande.
Ariana Grande (00:49):
Does this get taller every time?
Denny Directo (00:53):
The pop singer and Wicked star stood on her tippy-toes while taking home two Moon Person awards, including the night's top honor, Video of the Year.
Ariana Grande (01:00):
This project is about the hard work that is healing all different kinds of trauma.
Lady Gaga (01:11):
Heads up and sing. Abracadabra. Amor oo na na.
Denny Directo (01:11):
And Mother Monster won Artist of the Year, beating out Taylor Swift and Beyonce.
Mother Monster (01:16):
I dedicate this award to the audience, you very much deserve a stage to shine on, and I give you all my applause.
Ricky Martin (01:25):
Here we go! Ale, ale, ale!
Denny Directo (01:29):
The night was full of nostalgia with Ricky Martin performing a medley of his hip shaking hits as he received the Latin Icon Award.
Busta Rymes (01:36):
Don't this shit make a nigga wanna jump, Jump, jump.
Denny Directo (01:39):
And Busta Rhymes was honored with the first ever Rock the Bells Visionary Award. Mariah Carey ran through her biggest hits ahead of earning what is shockingly her first VMA, the prestigious Video Vanguard Award.
Mariah Carey (01:55):
I just have one question. What in the Sam Hill were you waiting for?
Denny Directo (02:00):
The VMAs also paid tribute to Ozzy Osbourne with Aerosmith, Steven Tyler and Joe Perry, along with Ozzy's protege, Youngblood. Sabrina Carpenter emerged on stage from a New York City manhole to perform her newest hit, Tears. The audience going wild as she danced in the rain with her gang of drag queens. And 22-year-old Tate McRae stunned the crowd with her first VMA performance. The Canadian singer closed out her performance showing off her skillful dance moves.
(02:47)
And guys, it really was a big night for young stars like Tate McRae there and Song of the Year winner Rosé for her collab with Bruno Mars. I loved that she dedicated her award to her 16-year-old self. Now, there was also an epic performance from Alex Warren who won Best New Artist. And of course we'll have more exclusive backstage moments tonight on Entertainment Tonight.
Speaker 2 (03:05):
I know you will. I say Tate McRae been doing her yoga. This girl was very limber.
Denny Directo (03:09):
That girl can dance. She can dance.
Speaker 2 (03:10):
It was great to see Mariah and Sabrina Carpenter.
Denny Directo (03:13):
That was one of my favorite performances of the night.
Speaker 2 (03:15):
Mine too, mine too.
Denny Directo (03:16):
I mean, I felt like it was old school VMAs performance, very Britney, you know, the concept, the stage and set pieces, and of course the choreography. And she got wet, huh?
Speaker 10 (03:25):
Yes, she did.
Denny Directo (03:25):
And it was real, I saw her running backstage and she was sopping wet, just soaked.
Speaker 2 (03:29):
And Ricky Martin looked so good. That's what I liked about the MTVs, they had something for all categories, all ages, all genres. You said Ricky Martin was sewing his pants. I didn't see that.
Denny Directo (03:38):
He posted on Instagram just moments before the red carpet. I guess, he had a wardrobe malfunction and he had to sew his … He's like, "I know how to sew so I could do it all."
Speaker 10 (03:45):
Here we go.
Speaker 11 (03:45):
And he can do it all. Shout out to LL too as well.
Denny Directo (03:48):
That's right.
Speaker 11 (03:49):
All right, Denny, we appreciate you. Thanks you so much.
Denny Directo (03:50):
